Nobuo Takase Shihan is the Head Instructor of Aikido Shinryukan and Technical Director for New Zealand Aikikai.
Shihan is the title given by the World Aikido Headquarters to a Master Instructor or "Professor" of Aikido. Takase Shihan is the senior Aikikai Aikido practitioner in New Zealand and the official New Zealand representative of the World Aikido Headquarters.
Born 6 February 1947 in Himeji, Japan, Takase Shihan began studying Aikido at Kogakkan University in Ise, Japan. His early teachers were Chiba, Kanai, Ichihashi and Watanabe Shihan, along with receiving instruction from O-Sensei and senior Hombu Shihan.
At age 22 Takase Shihan met another martial artist who had a dojo in Auckland who asked if he would be interested in coming to New Zealand to teach the art of Aikido. Thus in 1969 Takase Shihan emigrated to New Zealand with the intention of introducing the art of Aikido across the country.
Soon after he moved to New Zealand, Takase Shihan met and married his wife Barbara — they now have three adult children and live in Auckland. In 2020, Takase Shihan will celebrate 50 years of Aikido in New Zealand.
